Why 30 Minutes Is Enough to Start
Google Business Profile optimization is not a one-time task — it's an ongoing process. But the foundational work that moves the needle most can be done in a single focused session. This checklist covers the highest-impact items first.
Minutes 0-5: Audit Your NAP Data
Open your GBP dashboard and verify three things: your business name is exactly how it appears on your website and all directory listings (no abbreviations, no extra keywords), your address matches your website footer character-for-character, and your phone number is a local area code (not a tracking number that Google can't verify).
Minutes 5-15: Categories and Services
Your primary category should be the most specific accurate option. If you do HVAC repair and installation, "Air Conditioning Repair Service" will outperform "HVAC Contractor" for most searches because it's more specific. Add 3-5 secondary categories for all services you offer.
Then open the Services section and add each individual service you offer. Don't just say "Plumbing" — add "Water Heater Replacement," "Drain Cleaning," "Leak Detection," and "Sewer Line Repair" as separate line items with descriptions and prices if applicable.
Minutes 15-22: Business Description
Write a 750-character description that naturally includes your primary keyword, city, and service types. Avoid keyword stuffing. Write it for a human who wants to know if you're the right company for their job. Mention your specialties, service area, and years in business.
Minutes 22-28: Upload Photos
Profiles with more than 10 photos get 35% more website clicks than those with fewer. Add: a logo, a cover photo (vehicle or team), exterior of your business if applicable, photos of your team on job sites, and before/after shots of completed work. Label them properly — the filename and description are read by Google's image recognition.
Minutes 28-30: Post an Update
GBP Posts are underused by most contractors. A weekly post about a completed job, a seasonal promotion, or a helpful tip signals to Google that your profile is actively managed. It takes three minutes and gives you a freshness signal that competitors without a posting habit won't have.
What to Do Next
This 30-minute session addresses the foundational items. From here, the highest-leverage ongoing activities are review generation (shoot for 2-4 new reviews per week), monthly GBP Posts, and responding to all questions in the Q&A section within 24 hours.
