Most contractor websites have three to five significant SEO problems. The business owner has no idea they exist. Google does — and it factors them into whether you appear on page one or page four when someone searches for your service.

A free SEO audit takes about 60 seconds to run and surfaces those problems clearly. This guide explains how to run one, what the results mean, and what to fix first to move the needle on your local rankings.

What "SEO Audit" Actually Means

An SEO audit is a diagnostic scan of your website from Google's perspective. It checks the technical structure, on-page signals, backlink profile, and local SEO signals that influence where your site ranks in search results. It is not about opinions or guesses — it reports facts about your site's current state against known ranking criteria.

For a contractor website, the most relevant parts of an audit are:

  • Technical health: Can Google crawl and index your pages without errors?
  • On-page SEO: Do your title tags, meta descriptions, and headings accurately signal what each page is about?
  • Local signals: Is your NAP (name, address, phone) consistent across your site, GBP, and the major directories?
  • Backlink profile: Do any other authoritative websites link to yours?
  • Keyword rankings: What terms does your site currently rank for, and at what position?

How to Run a Free SEO Audit

Use the Free Website SEO Analysis tool on this site. Enter your domain name (no need to include https://) and click Analyze. The tool opens a full report in a new tab powered by Search Atlas — one of the most comprehensive SEO data platforms available. The report takes about 30 seconds to load and covers all the areas listed above, with specific page-by-page breakdowns for larger sites.

You do not need an account, a login, or a credit card. The full report is free.

How to Read Your Report: The Five Sections That Matter Most

1. Domain Authority / Site Score

This is an overall health score for your site's authority and technical condition. For most local contractor websites that have not done active SEO work, this number is in the 10–25 range. A competitor with active link building and consistent content may score 30–50. The number itself is less important than the gap between you and your top local competitors — that gap tells you how much work is needed to compete.

2. Organic Keywords

This section shows every keyword your site currently ranks for, at what position, and an estimated click count. Scan for keywords where you rank on positions 4–15 — those are terms where you have some visibility but are not yet capturing meaningful clicks. Small improvements to those pages (better title tags, more content depth, stronger internal linking) can move them into the top 3 positions where the traffic actually lives.

3. Technical Issues

This section lists specific problems: broken links, missing meta tags, pages with no H1, duplicate title tags, slow-loading pages, and crawl errors. Sort by severity. Fix critical issues first (pages returning errors, missing title tags). Medium-severity issues (duplicate meta descriptions, missing alt text) are important but less urgent. Low-severity issues can wait.

4. Backlinks

For most contractor websites with no active link-building history, this section will show a small number of referring domains — often under 20. Low backlink counts are normal for local service businesses but represent an opportunity. Every relevant link from a local directory, industry association, or local publication strengthens your site's authority signal. The audit shows your current baseline so you know where you are starting from.

5. Competitor Keyword Gap

This section shows keywords your top-ranking competitors appear for that your site does not. These are proven search terms with demonstrated traffic that you are currently invisible for. They represent your fastest growth opportunities — you are not creating a market, you are capturing one that already exists.

What to Fix First: A Priority Framework

An audit typically surfaces more issues than you can address in a week. Here is how to sequence them.

Fix in the next 48 hours (under 1 hour each)

  • Missing or duplicate title tags — these are the most visible on-page SEO element
  • Broken internal links — they prevent Google from crawling your site correctly
  • Pages returning 404 errors — these waste your crawl budget and damage user experience
  • Missing meta descriptions — not a ranking factor, but affects click-through rate

Fix this month (2–8 hours each)

  • Citation inconsistencies — correct your NAP across Google Business Profile, Yelp, Angi, and major directories
  • Google Business Profile completeness — fill in every available field, add photos, post weekly
  • Image optimization — compress large images dragging down your page speed score

Plan for next quarter (10–40 hours)

  • Build location-specific service pages for your top service-city combinations
  • Create content targeting keyword gap opportunities identified in the audit
  • Implement a review automation system to build review velocity

When to Go Beyond the Automated Audit

An automated audit is comprehensive for technical and on-page issues. What it cannot do is interpret your specific market — the competitive intensity in your service area, which keywords are actually worth targeting given your current authority, or what a realistic 90-day ranking improvement looks like for your specific situation.

If your audit surfaces major issues — very low domain authority, minimal keyword rankings, significant backlink deficits — that is when a human review adds value. Our Local SEO Audit service goes deeper than the automated scan: it maps your competitive landscape, prioritizes fixes by actual ranking impact in your market, and delivers a specific action plan rather than a generic issue list.

Most contractors who go through it find two or three problems they had no idea existed — usually specific citation mismatches, GBP category errors, or service area settings that are actively suppressing their Local Pack rankings.
